In this article learn exactly what podcasting is.

Podcasting is simply the delivery of audio content to computer users to listen to online, offline, on media players such as iPods, and more. Unlike a blog that delivers written content, a podcast delivers audio content.

The best thing about podcasting is that you can download a podcast and listen to it when and where you want to. You do not have to wait for your favorite radio host to come on. You will have something to listen to while you are at the doctor's, school breaks, work breaks, and much more. If you work on a computer at home you can listen to your favorite podcast whenever you want with your speakers or even headphones if you do not want to bother others around you. If you can listen to your own radio at work, you should be able to listen to your favorite podcast(s) while you are working as well.

According to Podcasting News,

The term podcasting was popularized by media entrepeneuar and former MTV VJ Adam Curry. Curry created an Applescript application that automated the process of downloading and syncing audio files to iPods.

Curry's application built on the work of programmer Dave Winer, a pioneer in both the world of web logs and XML development. Winer wrote the RSS 2.0 specification, which is used to deliver information about podcasts. RSS is an XML format that is used to define channels of information that contain elements, which are typically stories or web log entries.

Podcasts are published on websites by the author/speaker as an MP3 file so it can be listened to by anyone in the world. Listeners can also subscribe to podcasts by using the RSS feeds the same way they do by subscribing to a blog.

Podcasts are increasing in popularity as more and more people are buying and using MP3 players.

Happy Blogging!
